A farmer and his wife owned a goose that laid a golden egg every day. The eggs made them very wealthy, but they grew increasingly greedy and impatient. Believing the goose must have a stash of gold inside, they decided to kill it to get all the gold at once. However, when they cut the goose open, they found it was just like any other goose and had no more golden eggs inside.

As a result, they lost their source of wealth entirely. The moral of the story is often interpreted as a warning against greed and impatience, emphasizing the importance of appreciating and nurturing long-term gains instead of sacrificing them for immediate gratification.
